Farmers' Markets in No. NevadaShop for the Freshest Produce Around Reno, Sparks, and Lake TahoeSummer farmers' markets have become one of the most popular harbingers of summer here in Northern Nevada. Find one near you, here.
Summer's here and the time is right for shoppin' in the streets! That's right, what's better than spending a warm summer evening outdoors, shopping for some extra fresh, mouth-watering produce? Not much, if the popularity of local farmer's markets has anything to say about it. Reno/SparksThe granddaddy of local farmer's markets is the Sparks Hometowne Farmers Market, held every Thursday in Victorian Square. Shoppers can wander the length of the Square from 4 PM to 9 PM, sampling wares, listening to bands, and finding the freshest of produce. The kids area has camel rides, arts & crafts, and a bouncing platform where kids can jump their cares away. This year the market has added two "side streets" of entertainment and cooking demonstrations, so there's something for the entire family to enjoy. The Sparks market runs every Thursday night through the end of August, (except August 7 for Hot August Nights). You can call (775) 353-2291 for more information. Also in Sparks is the United Methodist Church Market, located at 1231 Pyramid Way, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., on Tuesdays, June 3 - Sept. 16. In Reno, you have a whole bevy of choices for the freshest fruits and vegetables. Shopper's Square, located at the intersection of Plumb Lane & South Virginia Street, offers a Tuesday market from 8 a.m. - 1 p.m., and it runs from June 3 - Oct. 7. On Wednesdays, you have your choice of the Sommersett Towne Square Market at 7650 Towne Square Way, from 4 p.m. - 8 p.m. running June 11 - Aug. 20, or the brand new downtown West Street Market, located between 1st and 2nd Streets, from 5 p.m. - 9 p.m., running July 16 through Sept. 24. This market runs on Fridays, and Saturdays, too, from 5 p.m. - 9 p.m. Fridays, just in time for the weekend, check the Tamarack Junction Casino Market at 13101 South Virginia Street, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., running June 6 through Oct. 10, or the Reno Village Shopping Center Market, located at California Avenue and Booth Street, which runs 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. from June 7 through Oct. 4. A new Saturday entry is the Whole Foods Market, located at their brand new store, 6139 South Virginia Street, from 8 a.m. - 1 p.m., late June - Oct. 4. Carson City/Douglas CountyCarson City offers its own market on Wednesday, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. It's located at the Pony Express Pavilion, and runs from June 4 through August 27. There's a Saturday market, too, at Third and Curry Streets, which runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. from June 28 through Oct. 18. Gardnerville also has a market on Wednesdays, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Lampe Park, Highway 395 to Waterloo Drive. The market runs from May 21 through Sept. 17. Next door neighbor Minden has their own market on Tuesdays in downtown Minden on Esmeralda Avenue. The market runs from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. from May 20 through Sept. 23 Lake TahoeLake Tahoe residents can also shop at their own market, located on the SouthShore in Stateline at the American Legion Hall Parking Lot, located at 2732 South Lake Tahoe Blvd. (Hwy 50). The market runs on Tuesdays, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., from June 3 through Oct. 14. The TahoeCity market is located at CommonsBeach in downtown TahoeCity on Thursdays, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and runs from May 22 through Oct. 16. The Truckee markets runs on Tuesdays at the Truckee River Regional Park, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. from June through mid-October FallonIf you're heading out to Fallon, you can enjoy the Fallon Farmers' Market from June 10 through August 26. The market takes place every Tuesday, from 4 PM to 7 PM at the intersection of Williams Avenue and Maine Street. FernleyIn Fernley, you'll find the market at the In-Town Park, at the intersection of Cedar Street and Hwy. 95A. It runs from 4 p.m. - 8 p.m. from late June to mid-August Out in Dayton, resident enjoy their market on Thursdays at the Community Roots Nursery & Landscape, at 60 Second Avenue. The market runs from 4 p.m. - 7 p.m. from June to Sept. Summer is fleeting in Northern Nevada, as we all know. While it's here to enjoy, the summertime farmers markets are a great way to enjoy some of Nevada's fine produce, and her glorious weather at the same time. Take some time and attend the farmers market near you, you'll be glad you did!
