If you're familiar with Hot August Nights in Reno, Nevada, you know about the cars, the entertainment, and the cruises that make up a big part of this annual event. (This year's event runs Aug.1 through Aug. 10th, 2008 throughout the Reno/Sparks area.) However, you might not know about some of the lesser-known events that really add to the charm of this favorite local event. Hot August Nights: The DragsWhat could be more reminiscent of the 1960s than drag races? Well, Hot August Nights takes you back to your youth with Drag Racing and Burnouts at the Reno-Fernley Raceway, just 30 miles east of Reno in Fernley, Nevada. On Friday, August 8, and Saturday, August 9, the drags will run from 6:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. both nights, gates open at 4:00 p.m., and tickets are available at the Raceway. Hot August Nights: Poker WalksIn Reno, gambling is part of the game plan, so why not expect a poker walk or two as part of the Hot August Nights festivities? If you're not familiar with poker walks, you are dealt five cards at the beginning of the walk, and it's your mission to find new cards at several stations along the walk, or with other participants during the walk. The one with the best poker hand at the end wins. You can find poker walks at several venues during the event:
Hot August Nights: Special Wine Walk to Benefit HANWhat better way to enjoy the views of cars and their drivers than enjoying a glass of wine, from the sidelines, of course. Head on out to the downtown River Walk on Saturday, August 2, from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. to enjoy a very special Wine Walk that benefits the Hot August Nights Association. Tickets are $25, and you can stroll among River Walk merchants to refill your glass as you browse their wares. Call Valerie at the Wild River Grille, 775-284-7455 for tickets, and get them early, the walk is limited to the first 1000 participants. Hot August Nights: Helicopter Tours Enjoy a flight over the Reno area from the roof of the Cal-Neva Casino's garage. Trips cost $40 and are provided by Premier Helicopter. They take place from Wednesday August 6th through Saturday August 9, from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Whatever event you choose, Hot August Nights is one of the most enjoyable events in Reno to come along all year, so don't miss it.
