Each July, Reno Nevada becomes an oasis to all things artistic, with the Reno is Artown Festival. Enjoy cultural events, many of them free, throughout the month of July in Reno!

Several years ago, during the US Mayor's Conference, USA TODAY reporter Richard Benedetto summed up Reno's arts perfectly. He wrote, "From the beauty of the snow-capped Sierra to the impressive downtown riverwalk project . . . from the creativity of your many artists and musicians to the delightful concert staged by your philharmonic orchestra, Reno proved itself the shining jewel in Nevada's crown."

This year, the arts are again alive and well in Reno, at the annual Reno is Artown Festival. This annual event has become one of the area's most popular, drawing locals and visitors alike. With outstanding events every day during the month of July, it's not hard to see why!

The Artown Festival has another great lineup of events planned for the entire month, that everyone in the family will enjoy. From the July 1 through July 31, you can enjoy music, historic tours, dance, theater, and art events all over the city. There are also many events geared to children, so take the grandkids out to enjoy the arts! One series of events is the "Discover the Arts" series, created expecially for families. They take place throughout the month, check the schedule, for full details.

One of the most popular events are the free "Rollin' on the River" rock concerts every Friday night at 5:30 p.m. in Wingfield Park. Pack up a picnic supper, and enjoy the summer weather, and then stay for the Movie in the Park at 9:00 p.m. Starting Friday, July 4, you can enjoy Movies in the Park every Friday from 9:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. in Wingfield Park.

Many local art galleries are having special shows during Artown. The Metro Gallery is featuring an exhibition by Michael Gilbert, local favorite Jim McCormick will have a show at the John Ben Snow Memorial Trust Art Gallery, and Sierra Arts Gallery is featuring a showcase of grants artists.

You can also catch historic walking and biking tours of Reno, special presentations at many of the art galleries in the area, and many special events at the Nevada Museum of Art. Some of the celebrities appearing this year include Wynton Marsalis, Mandy Patikin, Ringo Starr, and Andrew Bird.
