Lake in the Sky Airshow at TahoeCelebrate the 50th Anniversary of Lake Tahoe Airport with an AirshowNot as well known as it's Reno neighbor, the Reno Air Races, the Lake in the Sky Airshow offers some great entertainment in its own right.
The Lake in the Sky Airshow, a 19-year tradition at South Lake Tahoe, happens June 28, 2008, offering everything from aerobatics to a chili cook-off. The event takes place at the Lake Tahoe Airport, just on the outskirts of South Lake Tahoe. Parking at the Airport is $10.00 per vehicle, but admission to the show is free if you park at the Airport. You can also take a free shuttle to the Airport, just catch the "Blue Go" shuttle at the South Y Transit Center where Highway 50 and Highway 89 meet. It you catch the shuttle, you'll have to pay a $2.00 admission fee, but children under 12 are free. Handicap parking is available at the Air Strip Entrance gate to the Airport, as well. The Aerobatic PilotsEnjoy performances by three top-notch aerobatic pilots:
The Static DisplaySome of the military aircraft on static display will include F-18 Hornets, the Av-8B Harrier, a CH-47 Chinook helicopter, which will do a water drop demonstration, the HH-60 Blackhawk helicopter, a huge C-130 from the U.S. Coast Guard or Nevada Air Guard, and a HH-1 SAR helicopter, which will do a SAR demonstration. Some of the historic aircraft on display will include a T-33 trainer aircraft, (this aircraft will participate in this year's Reno Air Races), a YAK-50 (Russian aircraft), a T-6 Texan, and the historic B-25 bomber.. Other EventsThe Airshow opens at 8:00 a.m. to the public, but come early, and enjoy a pancake breakfast sponsored by the Lake Tahoe Kiwanis. Breakfast starts at 8:00 a.m. too, and continues to 11:00 a.m. There will also be food booths at the event, and a chili cook-off, sponsored by the Tahoe-Douglas Rotary Club begins at 11:00 a.m. There will also be safety demonstrations by various local groups, a motorcycle display, military demonstrations and fly-bys, and airplane rides available for an extra fee. Field and air activities start at 10:15 a. m. and conclude around 3:30 p.m. Getting ThereOnce you reach South Lake Tahoe, take Highway 50 (Lake Tahoe Blvd.), west (toward Sacramento). Continue on Highway 50 about 2 miles past the South Lake Tahoe "Y" intersection, and you'll see the Airport entrance on the left. From Sacramento and the Bay area, before you reach South Lake Tahoe from Echo Summit, stay on Highway 50, and about 2 miles past the Pioneer Trail traffic light in Myers, you'll find the Airport entrance on the right.
