Lake Las Vegas Water Fun GuideFrom Fishing to Cruises, Attractions Beckon Outdoor Enthusiasts
At Lake Las Vegas, the largest private lake in Nevada, options for water fun add to the area's appeal. The following will give you the lowdown on these activities.
Lake Las Vegas water activities, in addition to its specialty shopping and fine dining, make it an increasingly popular destination for people from around the world. FishingAll you need is a valid Nevada fishing license, a fishing rod and bait to fish for striped bass, rainbow trout, channel catfish, crappies and bluegill in the Lake Las Vegas waters. Most people fish from shore, but dock and boat fishing are also available. Guides can be hired and one-day fly fishing clinics (they usually last from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.) are offered on occasion during the spring. For more information, go to www.outdoorsource.net. Ice SkatingAlthough temperatures rarely dip below freezing, from mid-October/early November to the middle of February, an ice rink located on the waterfront attracts skaters of all ages. Ice skates, as well as socks, hats and gloves, can be rented from a kiosk near the rink. BoatingOn most weekends, one-hour sightseeing tours aboard the La Contessa yacht are offered. It’s also possible to explore the lake by water taxi or with personal watercraft such as paddle-boats and boats powered by electric motors, which can be rented at the marina. The 18-foot electric boats hold as many as eight people. Canoes and kayaks can be rented, too. The marina office is the best on-site source of information for tour schedules, rentals and prices. Although it is necessary in some cases to be a registered hotel guest in order to rent water craft at the lake, that restriction is becoming less important. Gondola RidesPerhaps the most popular of the lake’s pleasures are its gondola rides. A far cry from those gondolas that take passengers through an imitation Grand Canal at the Venetian on the Las Vegas Strip, Lake Las Vegas gondolas guarantee an experience away from the madding crowd. The “Classic Cruise” lasts one hour and includes a bottle of champagne or sparkling cider and a box of gourmet chocolates, while the “Exquisite Dinner Cruise” is a two-hour affair with beverages and an upgraded three-course meal catered by a Lake Las Vegas restaurant called Sunset and Vines. The latter costs about three times as much as the classic cruise. Other cruises include the ”Basket Lunch Cruise”, “Appetizer Cruise”, “Gourmet Dinner Cruise” and the ultimate “Wedding Cruise,” which includes bouquet and boutonniere, minister, photographer and photo package. Nearby Power Boat and Jet Ski PossibilitiesIn order to keep the waters of Lake Las Vegas pristine and noise levels down, speedboats and water skiing is not allowed. However, power boat and jet ski rentals are readily accessible at Lake Mead, less than a 30-minute drive away. Two of the major rental companies are Seven Crown Resorts and Calville Bay Marina.
