MAGIKO Fest in the Carson ValleySummer Arts & Outdoor Festival in Minden, Gardnerville, & Genoa, NVThe Carson Valley is a wonderful Northern Nevada getaway, and from June 19 through July 5, 2008, it's an extra special place to visit when MAGIKO comes to town.
The MAGIKO Festival highlights some of the many divergent activities visitors can enjoy throughout the Carson Valley. If you've never visited the towns of Minden, Gardnerville, Genoa, and Topaz Lake, you're in for a rare treat. These towns, nudging the base of the Sierra Nevada, are a gateway to all kinds of recreational opportunities, from mountain biking to hiking, boating, and golf, just to name a few. The tiny town of Genoa is actually the birthplace of Nevada, it's spot where the first permanent settlement began back in 1859. Minden and Gardnerville adjoin each other, and they form the hub of a largely agricultural valley that often appears just like it did over 100 years ago, when most of the valley hosted dairy and alfalfa ranches. Today, Minden and Gardnerville are home to thousands of residents, but they still retain that small-town, cozy atmosphere, and they are a wonderful place for a family vacation, especially during the magical MAGIKO festival. One of the premier MAGIKO sports events is a day-long bike tour on 6/22/2008, beginning at Mormon Station State Park in Genoa at 9:00 a.m, and finishing with an old-fashioned ice cream social and barbecue. The tour is open to cyclists of any level, and they'll get a chance to view some of the historic Carson Valley ranches as they travel the backroads of the area. Another popular event is the MAGIKO Summercross, which takes place from 8 a.m. to dusk at the Douglas County Fairgrounds on 6/21. It's a family-friendly dirt track motocross challenge that features Carson Valley and Northern Nevada riders. You might enjoy an ATV Geocache adventure, a speedy search for geocaches on ATV in the scenic foothills of the Sierra Nevada, or the Greater Reno-Tahoe Regional Classic Golf Tournament, all unique events featured during this unique experience that's fun for the entire family. MAGIKO isn't just about outdoor adventures, either. It's a celebration of the arts and local artists, as well. There are many art and craft galleries in the two towns, and you can take in the Carson Valley Open Studios Art Tour on 6/28 throuh 6/29 (call 775-782-1124 for information), a concert in Minden Park, movies in the park, or a real traditional Fourth of July concert in Genoa's historic Mormon Station Park, too. If you're looking for food treats, try Basque Sunday at the Carson Valley Country Club Restaurant in Gardnerville, or the Genoa Lakes/Tahoe Ridge Winery Winemakers Dinner at Antoci's Supper Club at the Genoa Lakes Golf Club. Or, dance the night away at the Wings of Change Hanger Dance on 7/5 at the Minden-Tahoe Airport. Whatever you're looking for, you can find it at the MAGIKO Celebration in Carson Valley, and it just may become one of those annual events you'll want to enjoy every year from now on!
