2009 Reno-Sparks Golf Course Round-Up, FeesChallenging Courses, Mountain and Desert Scenery Offer Variety
The Reno-Sparks array of golf courses runs the gamut from lush green layouts in residential neighborhoods to desert oases surrounded by sage-covered foothills
Two decades ago, only a handful of golf courses dotted the Reno-Sparks landscape. Now, more than a dozen courses --several of them public -- offer a variety of playing venues for visitors as well as residents. Washoe County Golf Course and Sierra SageWashoe County Golf Course (2601 S. Arlington Ave.) was constructed on the site of the city’s former airport. Located in a leafy residential area of Reno known as Old Southwest, the course was a WPA project during the Great Depression and opened in 1936. Green fees are $34 with cart; $20 without. The other county-owned course is Sierra Sage, located 10 miles north of Reno at 6355 Silver Lake Blvd., Stead . The course’s front nine holes were built by the U. S.Air Force in 1958. $36 with cart, $22 without LakeRidgeLess than a mile south of the Washoe County course in residential Reno, LakeRidge (1218 Golf Course Drive) was designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr. in 1969. Its spectacular 15th tee offers a panoramic view of Reno while the hole is on an island surrounded by a manmade lake. Windows of the 19th Hole Restaurant overlook the course. $100, weekends; $88, weekdays. The two newest courses in the Reno area are the private Somersett Country Club (2019 Championship Trail; which opened in 2004 and the public 9-hole Links at Kiley Ranch (5800 Kiley Links Drive, Sparks). The latter, which opened in 2007, has the lowest green fees in the area at $15. Wildcreek Golf Course and Northgate Golf ClubWildcreek (3500 Sullivan Lane, Sparks) was the first course built and operated by the Reno-Sparks Convention & Visitors Authority (RSCVA). It opened in 1978 with a par 3, nine hole executive course and an 18-hole championship course (par 72). The latter course hosted Gattlin Brothers Senior PGA tour events in 1982, 1983 and 1984. $59, weekends; $49, weekdays. Northgate (1111 Clubhouse Drive), the second RSCVA golf venue, blends a Scottish-links style course with a desert setting. Established in 1988, the 18-hole course was designed by Benz and Poellet and was the first course in Nevada to be chosen for U. S. Open qualifying. $48, weekends; $42, weekdays. Rosewood Lakes Course and D’Andrea Golf Club The layout of the city-owned Rosewood Lakes course (6800 Pembroke Drive) incorporates 60 acres of federally protected wetlands. $33, 18 holes; $29, nine. The 18-hole Keith Foster designed D’Andrea (2351 N. D’Andrea Parkway, Sparks) is known for its views of Reno and the Sierra Nevada from the back nine. $105, weekends; $95 weekdays. Semi-Private and Private ClubsWolf Run (1400 Wolf Run Road) is a semi-private course, operated by the University of Nevada-Reno and home of the Wolf Pack men’s and women’s teams. The course, established in 1998, was designed by John Fleming and Lou Eiguren. $75, weekends; $65, weekdays. ArrowCreek Country Club (2905 Arrowcreek Parkway), in the southwest Reno foothills, is another semi-private, with a 18-hole public course ($100) and a private 18-hole Arnold Palmer–designed championship course. The Resort at Red Hawk (6600 N. Wingfield Parkway, Sparks) has one private ( $95, weekends; $85, weekdays) and one day-fee course, too. Once the city’s elite country club and the site of tournaments in which the likes of Arnold Palmer played, Hidden Valley (3575 E. Hidden Valley Drive) lies near Reno’s eastern boundary. Recently redesigned, the club’s most illustrious member is LPGA Hall of Fame golfer Patty Sheehan. The Montreaux Golf Course in southwest Reno is a gated-community private course. Most green fees listed above include cart. Fees for seniors, juniors, after certain hours are generally lower.
