Then visit the Nevada State Fair day or night, for carnival action, great food, lots of animals, and exhibits of some of the state's best food, crafts, and products. Carnival rides keep the entire family up in the air when they're not checking out the exhibits, creative living entries, and all those barnyard animals on display. ContestsOne of the biggest areas of competition at the Nevada State Fair is the livestock competitions, where local youth people show off their prize animals through their 4-H Club memberships. Each year, local agriculture enthusiasts auction off thousands of dollars worth of cattle, sheep, and other animals, while they learn how to raise and take care of these animals in the process. Other competions include the 4th Annual Butter Sculpturing Contest, sponsored by Model Dairy, which takes place on Friday, August 22 at 5 pm in the Main Arena. Daily competitions include recipe contests, quilting contests, and other creative living judging events. The Wiener Dog RacesOne of the most popular events at the State Fair has proven to be the wiener dog races. This year, races take place on Sunday, August 30. Check-in for racers begins at 11 am, with the races starting at 1 pm. Event organizers expect at least 150 entries in this year's races, and you can call 775-688-5767 for registration information. Carnival and Food BoothsEnjoy dozens of carnival rides, a rowdy midway, and food booths galore outside the fair displays. Purchase discounted unlimited ride carnival wristbands at select area Scolari's Food and Drug or Sak n' Save markets, for $16. Inside the fair, daily unlimited ride carnival wristbands are available for $25.00. The LocationThe State Fair takes place at the Reno Livestock Events Center and Fairgrounds, at 1350 North Wells Avenue, Reno, just off Interstate 80 near downtown Reno. State Fair TicketsAdults ages 18 through 64 Tickets are $10.00 Children ages 11 through 17 Tickets are $10.00 Seniors over (65+), Children (10 and under) and the Grand Stand Fri & Sat Nights are all free. State Fair HoursWed. 8/26 and Thurs. 8/27: Fair opens at 5 pm, the indoor exhibits close at 10 pm the outdoor exhibits close at 11 pm and the carnival closes at Midnight. Fri. 8/28 and Sat. 8/29: The fair opens at Noon, the indoor exhibits close at 11 pm, the outdoor exhibits and the carnival close at Midnight. Sun. 8/30: The fair opens at Noon, the indoor exhibits close at 8 pm, the outdoor exhibits close at 8 pm, and the carnival closes at 11 pm.
